Parenting With the Enneagram

Two Enneagram Books

In this article, I will review two Enneagram books by Elizabeth Wagele, the Enneagram of Parenting and the book she wrote for children, to help them better understand themselves, Finding the Birthday Cake.

Both books have helped me and my son tremendously! Both books offer helpful quizzes for parents to use to evaluate their children to see which Enneagram style they use.

And in both, the author cautions the parent that the Enneagram style may not become set in stone until they get older. While they are still young, the best thing to look at is their behavior and their tendency.

She uses a lot of cartoons in both books to illustrate each type and painting a picture of what each one is like not only makes each type seem cute and endearing, but also makes the distinctions between them clear.

"Elizabeth Wagele is a writer, cartoonist and musician who lives in Berkeley, CA, with her husband, Gus, where they raised four children and enjoy visits from their grandchildren. In 1994, HarperCollins published The Enneagram Made Easy, which is now used all over the world. She followed that with books on relationships, parenting, introverts, a children's book, and a CD on Beethoven where she plays excerpts from his piano sonatas and discusses his personality."-from Elizabeth Wagele's website

The Enneagram of Parenting

What I found helpful about this book is the way it translated each type into child language and behavior. She really did a good job of explaining how each personality type would express itself in school, at play, during mealtimes, at bedtime, and she described how they would react to stress. She also explains what they need from us as parents, and gives helpful suggestions about how to meet your child where he is, depending on his type.

Finding the Birthday Cake

Though I read this book as well, it is actually written as a story book for children, to teach the Enneagram to them in a way that makes it easy for them to understand. My son has read it several times and feels quite clearly that he and I are both fours (we are) and is clear about the others in our family, too.

In fact, he understands it so well that he enjoys guessing about people outside the family and can make a case for the type he thinks they are based on what he has observed in their behavior.

There Are So Many Phobias and Disorders That People Suffer From - Discover What They Are

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Have you ever met someone who was afraid of something they shouldn't be afraid of, as it was somewhat out of the norm - and I'm not talking about the fear of drowning, or being afraid of heights, because it's okay to be afraid of things that can hurt you, and a little fear keeps us from doing things that can cause us problems later. Nevertheless, far too many people are afraid of such things as darkness, or going outside.

If you'd like to learn more of the phobias that people have, there is a great book the you should read, and it will help you understand these folks who have these fears and phobias, and how to help them get over their fears, and understand how to deal with these personalities as you meet them. The name of the book that I'd like to recommend to you is;

Phobias - Diseases and Disorders" by Gail B. Stewart, published by Lucent Books Incorporated, San Diego, CA, (2001), 96 pages, ISBN: 1-56006-726-8.

In this book the author puts you into the mind of those who have dreadful feelings of fear, or who suffer from a phobia disorder. Once you put yourself in their perspective, it becomes readily apparent how debilitating this could be. The author explains in chapter to the history and early research on phobias, although today we know much more than we ever did back then.

Luckily the author brings you up to speed. And although this book was written in 2001, and neuroscientists have learned more since, it is a good basic fundamental book to read. There is also a chapter on the challenges of phobias, and how they can cause social problems, the book explains simple phobias, and fears that we all have, whether justified, or not necessarily.

If you've ever watched someone have a panic attack, there is a chapter about that which explains what's going through their mind, and how they lose control. Once you understand this and you watch them ramp up with fear, you can bring it back into perspective for them by talking to them a certain way. In fact in chapter 6 the final chapter the author explains how to overcome phobias if you happen to have one, and how to help and consult others to help them overcome their own fears.

Personally, this was a great book to read, because I am someone who enjoys wearing T-shirts which say; "No Fear" - and now I know how the other people feel, but rather than feel sorry for them, I think from now on I'm going to try to help them. Wish me luck. And maybe you should buy this book and do the same thing. Please consider all this.

The Power of the Sub-Conscious Mind by Joseph Murray

I am now reading the Power of the Sub-Conscious mind for the second time. I cannot get enough of this book. It resonates with everything I believe as to why we exist and how our thoughts completely create the life we choose no matter what.

If I am having a bad day, I will go home, flip open this book, and I will always find my answer. I know from reading this book that there is nothing that will get past your conscious mind beliefs until you so convince that part of your mind to make it true. Remember, the conscious mind is the king, if he doesn't believe it, you have to work on it by producing a better thought, or repeating your affirmation of choice. For example, if you say to yourself, "I am rich," your conscious will not believe that, he knows better, so you have to change that statement to something it will believe, like, "my wealth is increasing every day." That is a more believable statement to your conscious, once that is done, your subconscious takes over and works on making things happen in your everyday life. You will notice ideas coming to you that will help increase your wealth, like another job, a potential home business either by yourself or a friend may call you out of the blue with a great opportunity in the form of a partnership. You will find yourself at times saying, "I was just thinking about that," well, there is a reason for that, you thought it and things started to happen because of that focus on a particular thought. There is no such thing as a coincidence, it happened for a reason. Pay attention to your thoughts, watch how they go all over the place, try to control them when they get like that, and just think about what you really want because you can have it. The mind is a powerful place and that is how everything in this world became to be, it all starts with a thought that becomes stronger and then action follows that thought because your desire becomes that strong to allow it to manifest.

The power of our thoughts is so very interesting to me and I strongly encourage everyone to pick up a copy of this book, leave it by your night stand and read a little every night. This book will lift your spirits in every respect, I promise.

Are You Providing Greater Value Than The Compensation You Receive?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Many of us are so used to the mentality that we are giving a certain amount of value and we are compensated for what we put out. We do not think of the potential of going above and beyond with the value we provide and how that can transform our lives. Are you thinking only of what you can get for yourself or are you focused on how you can help others? The answer to this question will determine the health, wealth and happiness you achieve in your life. If you focus on what you can give without thinking about what is in it for you, you will achieve greater success and it will be in a framework of happiness, not stress.

I have been letting go of limiting beliefs from my past and it is so freeing. We do not need to hold onto past programming. There is so much sanity in just letting it go. We do not need to be right. That has been a big lesson for me. I was hurt very deeply emotionally in childhood and letting go of being hurt now is the key for me. When someone hurts me now, I just send them love and wish them the best. We do not need to agree. Let's just be.

But also, we do not have to have toxic relationships that are not healthy for us. When we let go of our past, we free up our true self and we can embrace our abundance, instead of pushing it away. And by being in touch with that inner core, you will be able to give so much more and be abundantly more creative. This will magnetize abundance to you. Keep focusing on giving and you will receive a windfall of joy and prosperity in your life.

Book Review: Why Mars and Venus Collide by John Gray, PhD

IP is over the quota
IP is over the quota

Recently I've read the book, Why Mars and Venus Collide, Improving Relationships by Understanding How Men and Women Cope Differently with Stress by John Gray, Ph.D. I absolutely loved the book! I must say, this is a much needed book for couples because it educates and gives insights and specific tips and strategies on dealing with stress in men and women.

The book explains how our brains are structured and function differently thus affecting our behavior. In a chapter called Hardwired to Be Different the author points out that "Men and women possess two different types of brains, designed equally for intelligent behavior". The main difference is that men have more gray matter than women do and women have more white matter than men do. This fact alone explains why we excel at different tasks and communicate differently. The chapter also points out why men are focused on one task at a time and women are multitasking, as well as why men are risk takers and women are conservative and prioritize security. Because of the fundamental difference in brain structure and function women should not expect men to behave like women and vice versa. We should respect these differences and work with each other keeping these differences in mind.

Another part of the book points out the difference in hormones and how it affects our behavior. Special emphasis is made on stress hormones and their effect on a man's and a woman's well being. Women generally need to focus on keeping their oxytocin levels up and men need to focus on keeping their testosterone levels up. The author gives a list of 100 ways a woman can raise her oxytocin levels and 100 ways a man can help a woman raise her oxytocin levels. I found the 90/10 solution for a woman to keep her feel-good hormone up especially revealing; this is something I always will keep in my mind. There are also tips on how a woman can help her man raise his testosterone levels.

Three chapters of the book the author dedicated to explaining why the fights start, what we can do to prevent them, how to stop a fight and how to make up after a fight. These chapters are loaded with helpful tips and suggestions. From now on I will keep in mind that "mixing feelings and problem solving simply doesn't work". The author suggests that we have two types of conversations -- one to lessen emotional tension, called Venus Talk, and the other to solve the problem.

I had several "Aha" moments while reading the book. This is the book I will be referring to to get answers and reminders on how to deal with stress and improve a relationship with my partner. Now I have a better understanding of our differences and what my partner and I need to effectively cope with stress. I know that applying the tips and strategies described in the book will help couples bring the best out of their partners.
